Pilot translation at Curtin

Grant Duration: 3 years

Funder: Feilman Foundation

Administering University: Curtin University

In 2022, the Feilman Foundation granted COMPAS $693,000 to conduct a pilot translation program at Curtin University, aimed at first-year students. This initiative focused on utilising a predictive algorithm as a novel screening tool to identify students at risk of suicide within the following 12 months.

Commencing in 2022 and concluding in 2024, the pilot sought to assess the effectiveness of the algorithm in predicting potential mental health crises among new students. By integrating advanced data analysis techniques, COMPAS aimed to provide timely interventions and support for those identified as at risk.

The programme not only intended to enhance the well-being of students at Curtin University but also aimed to establish a model that could be replicated in other educational institutions. The insights gained from this pilot study are anticipated to contribute significantly to the broader understanding of mental health challenges facing first-year university students and inform future strategies for prevention and support.

As the pilot progresses, ongoing evaluation and adaptation of the predictive tool will be crucial in ensuring its effectiveness and reliability in real-world applications.
